Trapped in Zone One was awarded the Isle of Dogs Grants Chest & Millwall Park Endowment Fund by East End Community Foundation to support Move and Sketch, previously supported by Walking and Cycling London Grant.

Walking and Cycling Grants London is a programme funded by Transport for London in partnership with The London Marathon Charitable Trust and managed by the environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London. It offers funding to community groups such as residents’ associations, charities and youth groups for projects that encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to walk and cycle safely.

This programme is open to Over 18’s from diverse ethnic background living, working, and studying in East London. Sessions will improve fitness and activity levels with weekly 2-hour outdoor walking sessions within Tower Hamlets, Greenwich and Newham, incorporating a creative activity of sketching/drawing.

Miranda Leedham, Head of Customer Marketing and Behaviour Change at TfL, said: "We’re really pleased that Trapped in Zone One can benefit from this grant and enable more East Londoners to walk and improve their fitness through the move and sketch programme. Creating opportunities to enable people of all ages and abilities to get active through walking is really important to creating a healthier and more sustainable capital. We look forward to seeing the project develop and the impact it will have on helping women across East London to enjoy the benefits of being physically active".

Deirdre Cole, Strategic Partnership Programme Lead for The London Marathon Charitable Trust, said: “The London Marathon Charitable Trust is proud to be working in partnership with Transport for London on their Walking and Cycling Grants London programme. It will be exciting to see the impact that Trapped in Zone One’s project will have in creating new opportunities for walking within the local community, helping to fulfil The Trust’s mission of inspiring activity.

These sessions are donation based to attend, online booking is required through Eventbrite prior to participating.

Five Ways to Good Mental Wellbeing

Our sessions explores the 5-ways to good mental health, as it is important to look after yourself, both physically and mentally.

Connect with Other People

Having good relationships with your family, friends and colleagues is important as it can:

  • Improve your feelings of belonging and self-worth

  • Give you the chance to share positive activities and experiences

  • Provide emotional support for you and allow you to support others.

Be Physically Active

Being active and exercising regularly is important for your physical health but it can also improve your mental health by:

  • Boosting your self-esteem

  • Reducing depression, anxiety and stress

  • Lowering your risk of long-term health conditions, such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and some cancers

  • Helping you to set goals for yourself and achieve them

  • Causing chemical changes in your brain that can have a positive impact on your mood.

It is recommended that adults should try to be active every day and do at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week.

Learn New Skills

Learning something new can be good for your mental wellbeing as it:

  • Raises your self-esteem and self-confidence

  • Helps you to gain a sense of purpose

  • Connects you with other people

  • Reduces low mood and depression.

Give to Others

Acts of giving and kindness are known to help improve mental wellbeing by:

  • Creating positive feelings

  • Providing a sense of reward

  • Giving you a feeling of purpose and self-worth

  • Helping you to meet other people.

Pay Attention to the Present Moment

Being in the moment and being aware of your thoughts, your feelings, your body and the world around you can improve your mental health. Often called ‘mindfulness’, this can help you to understand yourself better, change the way you approach challenges and enjoy life more.

What to wear and bring

We recommend bringing a bottle of water and wearing clothing and footwear you are comfortable in that allows you to move freely whilst walking outdoors.

We ask all attendees to bring their own art material of a sketchbook, pencils, eraser, and sharper as a means of continuing the activity in your time after the session creating your own Move and Sketch plan. If you do require assistance with materials, contact us prior to attending the activity.

Move and Sketch was commissioned by Canary Whard Group to host a series of workshops incorporating movement and sketching in Canary Wharf, exploring Henry Moore's 'Draped Seated Woman' Old Flo sculpture.

We previously displayed artworks from our Move and Stretch programme at GreatArt in Shoreditch and the session will resume in January 2025. Our activities explore galleries and greenspaces with walking sessions and getting creative by producing a sketch to help towards improving your wellbeing in being outdoors bringing nature into your everyday life benefits both your mental and physical wellbeing.
